Fiji’s inaugural Conservation Science Forum, 5–7 August, 2009

Wetlands International-Oceania (WI-O), in partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), is hosting Fiji’s inaugural Conservation Science Forum from 5th – 7th of August, 2009. This is a three day event which will be held at Studio 6 apartments at 1-3 Walu street, Suva. Download the forum list of programmes.

As a hub for the Pacific and a leader in tropical island conservation, Fiji has attracted and established a plethora of conservation and development organizations to the country. We recognize the growing need to consolidate and synthesize the science that is being done in-country to assist in holistic and multi-disciplinary conservation and development decision making. Over the three days it is anticipated that conservationists working in Fiji will be presenting their work and highlighting challenges, outcomes and future conservation priorities.

Presentation themes

There was a call for presentation abstracts and over 60 were received and accepted for presentation. Based on the abstracts received, there will be eight presentation themes: Ecosystem Based Management and conservation planning; Habitat mapping; Species conservation; Community based adaptive management and socioeconomics; Marine protected areas; Marine ecology; Terrestrial ecology; and Taxonomy.

To help facilitate this forum we have selected a range of local, regional and international conservationists who have worked in Fiji.

Forum proceedings

The Forum’s proceedings which will be publicly available following the conclusion of the conference. The proceedings will include the annotated abstracts from the three days of presentations.
